Illinois activists toss Gov. Thompson from the closet
by Rex Wockner The Weekly News
CHICAGO-Chanting "Out of the bars and into the streets," and "Two, four, six, eight, what makes you think your governor's straight?" 250 angry AIDS activists marched through Chicago's New Town neighborhood to Governor James Thompson's Chicago mansion in bordering Uptown September 26. The candlelight demonstration was in protest of Illinois House Bill 4005, the socalled "secret AIDS testing" measure signed into law by Thompson on September 2. Several men left Gay bars on Halsted Street and joined the demonstrators as they passed.
When the procession arrived at the governor's home, protestors chanted, "Hey, Big Jim, come out of the closet." Lights were on in the mansion and a gray-and-white cat sat in an open upstairs window. Switching to a chant of "Shame! Shame! Shame!" the demonstrators sailed paper airplane protest letters into the governor's yard.
At a pre-march meeting, Tim Drake of the Illinois Gay and Lesbian Task Force had told activists: "We're tired of being abused by closet cases in the state government." Speaking to reporters, Paul Adams of Chicago to AIDS Rights added: "We want Ther from remember his roots to.ant him to hurt whence he came. Wech a part of that he the people that his carried a poster of a Gay belongs to" with a caption reading: leathamber Me, Big Jim?" A reporter for the ainstream media commented that it is "common knowledge in the newsroom" that Thompson, who is married, is a homosexual.
State Senator Ellis Levin also addressed the pre-march gathering, calling H.B. 4005

ngle most repressive piece of legislaon to ever bear the governor's signature. ...You could not possibly concoct a measure more likely to spread AIDS or to keep people from going to the doctor," Levin said.
The "secret AIDS testing" portion of H.B. 4005 was tacked on as an amendment by conservative state representative Penny Pullen during the final two days of Illinois' most recent legislative session. It allows doctors to test their patients for HIV antibodies without the knowledge or consent of their patients.
The measure was vehemently opposed by the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Chicago Health Department, and by all Gay and AIDS activist groups in the state. The ACLU says it is now looking for clients to challenge the law in court.
The only lobbying in favor of the bill came from the Illinois State Medical Society, which the State Board of Elections reports has given more than $115,000 to the governor's campaign chest in the past two and one-half years. Illinois AIDS activists declared September 26 "Who Owns Jim Thompson Day?"
When read the sections of this article concerning Governor Thompson's alleged sexual orientation, press secretary Vinnie Petrini angrily replied: "Absolutely not! That's trash!" and hung up the phone.
The idea of "tossing out of the closet" homosexual public figures who work against the interests of Gay and AIDS rights movements was given an unofficial green light at last February's War Conference of national Gay and Lesbian leaders. Activists in Dallas promptly "tossed out" anti-Gay activist Phyllis Schlafly's son, who they say "came out" to them during the 1984 Republican convention. Shortly thereafter, New York activist Andy Humm "retossed" Brooklyn Catholic Archbishop Magavero in an interview with Chicago Outlines. ■
NGLTF lobbying leads to funding
On October 1, President Reagan signed into law an appropriations bill that calls for a major study of hate crimes by the Department of Justice. At the request of NGLTF, Senator Lowell Weicker (R-CT) added report language to the bill designating "sufficient funds for NIJ [National Institute of Justice, the research division of the Justice Department] to conduct an 'Issues and Practices' study on hate crimesi.e., crimes motivated by race, religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity." According to the appropriations language, the NIJ study will "highlight existing programs to combat hate crimes and provide guidelines for criminal justice agencies to 1) identify, classify, investigate and prosecute hate crimes, 2) encourage reporting by hate crime victims, and 3) improve the treatment of hate
